What Causes Red, Bloodshot Eyes?

Red or"bloodshot" eyes occur when the blood vessels on the eye's surface become enlarged and congested with blood. This happens because not enough oxygen is getting to the cornea or the tissue covering the eyes.

Bloodshot eyes aren't generally anything to worry about, but if you are also experiencing pain and or impaired vision, you should see your doctor incase something more serious is going on.

The causes of bloodshot eyes are numerous and varied and the redness often appears some time after the activity that caused them. Some of the common causes are outlined below.

Treating Bloodshot Eyes

To get rid of the redness, eyedrops are often needed. The type you require will depend on the cause of your particular problem. If the cause is merely from over-use of the computer or from a hangover, you will find that the redness clears itself up with time. However, you can still benefit from using drops as they will lubricate the eye and reduce the redness quickly.

If you suffer regularly from bloodshot eyes we recommend you address the underlying cause if known, or perhaps consider looking at your general lifestyle and whether you are getting sufficient nutrients in your diet. You may also benefit by taking a vision supplement such as Comvita's Bilberry Capsules.

The following section contains information and links to several eyedrops that can help.
