Red or"bloodshot" eyes occur when the blood vessels on the eye's surface become enlarged and congested with blood. This happens because not enough oxygen is getting to the cornea or the tissue covering the eyes.

Bloodshot eyes aren't generally anything to worry about, but if you are also experiencing pain and or impaired vision, you should see your doctor incase something more serious is going on.

The causes of bloodshot eyes are numerous and varied and the redness often appears some time after the activity that caused them. Some of the common causes are outlined below.

Bloodshot Eyes That Appear in the Morning - Possible Causes:

• Alcohol or Diet from the previous day or night
• Lack of Sleep
• Skin products used at night getting in the eye (e.g. Moisturisers)

Bloodshot Eyes That Appear at Night - Possible Causes:

• Sun exposure during the day
• Overused or fatigued eyes from computer screen or reading
• Exposure to toxins and or fumes (paint fumes, cigarette smoke etc)
